Join us for AEG's Annual Meeting Virtual Day. This will be two online only days of technical presentations for those that would like to participate in the Annual Meeting but are unable to attend. All presentations will be recorded for later viewing.  9 PDHs will be available for this session.

We are excited to announce that the AEG GASH Technical Working Group is hosting a second virtual day on Tuesday, September 23 from 10am-2:00pm Eastern Time. There is no additional cost for this extra day. This is the same group that convened the outstanding Virtual Volcanic Hazards Symposium earlier this month.

This Special GASH Virtual Session will focus “ADVANCES IN STUDIES OF INTRAPLATE TECTONICS” and will complement the in-person GASH Symposium on the same topic that will be held on Thursday, September 25, 2025. The Virtual session will feature four (4) invited speakers who found it impossible to acquire funding from their respective employers to attend the in-person GASH Symposium. During these sterling technical presentations, speakers will provide detailed information on their studies conducted in the following intraplate tectonic settings to characterize geologic features and resultant seismic hazards:

  1. The Reelfoot Rift and its associated earthquakes beneath the Mississippi River Valley of the Central United States.

  2. Earthquake hazards in the New Madrid Seismic Zone in West Tennessee.

  3. Faulting and the resultant M5.1 earthquake in Sparta, North Carolina, the only earthquake in the Southeastern United States for which surface faulting has been observed.

  4. Analysis of faulting in the Charleston Seismic Zone, South Carolina, using multiple geophysical data sets.

“This Special Virtual Symposium is going to be too exciting to miss for those keen to hear case histories that showcase the analysis of geologic and seismic hazards in intraplate tectonic settings. The opportunity to learn about approaches and methods applied and to talk with the experts who applied them will be unmatchable!” – Convener Gerry Stirewalt

As a member of AEG for more than 46 years, I am continuously reminded of the many benefits of attending Annual meetings. A few examples of exciting opportunities that commonly occur during Annual meetings that I personally find rewarding are as follows:

  1. Excellent stimulating and informative presentations related to applied geoscience that cover a broad spectrum of interesting topics.

  2. Excellent field courses given by individuals who are extremely knowledgeable about the locations being visited.

  3. Connecting with friends and colleagues as well as adding new folks to my professional and personal networks.

  4. Participating in mentoring sessions for upcoming “rock stars” who will become the future leaders in their respective technical fields and keep AEG on the cutting edge of applied geoscience.

  5. Discussions and presentations that remind me of the importance of encouraging diversity, equity, and inclusion at AEG.

  6. Both teaching (by sharing my experience-based knowledge in conversations and presentations) and learning (from discussions with and presentations made by treasured colleagues and amazingly sharp students).

"Attending the AEG annual conference is an amazing opportunity for students in engineering and environmental geosciences! The support that the AEG community offers for students is like no other. There are so many opportunities to help cover the costs of the conference, such as volunteering events and travel grants. AEG is a smaller conference focused in engineering and environmental geoscience, which allows for more intimate networking events and for students to have their voices heard. Members in attendance at the conference are enthusiastic and excited to hear about research that is being done by students and they give great feedback on poster presentations. The members of AEG are so supportive of students and young professionals, and I look forward to attending more conferences in the future. I would love to see the number of student attendees grow, because I feel that this conference was crucial to my development as a professional and as a geoscientist!"
