Also iconic are its cheesesteaks and the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art immortalized by Sylvester Stallone’s triumphant run in the film “Rocky.

As a member of AEG for more than 46 years, I am continuously reminded of the many benefits of attending Annual meetings. A few examples of exciting opportunities that commonly occur during Annual meetings that I personally find rewarding are as follows:

  1. Excellent stimulating and informative presentations related to applied geoscience that cover a broad spectrum of interesting topics.

  2. Excellent field courses given by individuals who are extremely knowledgeable about the locations being visited.

  3. Connecting with friends and colleagues as well as adding new folks to my professional and personal networks.

  4. Participating in mentoring sessions for upcoming “rock stars” who will become the future leaders in their respective technical fields and keep AEG on the cutting edge of applied geoscience.

  5. Discussions and presentations that remind me of the importance of encouraging diversity, equity, and inclusion at AEG.

  6. Both teaching (by sharing my experience-based knowledge in conversations and presentations) and learning (from discussions with and presentations made by treasured colleagues and amazingly sharp students).

"Attending the AEG annual conference is an amazing opportunity for students in engineering and environmental geosciences! The support that the AEG community offers for students is like no other. There are so many opportunities to help cover the costs of the conference, such as volunteering events and travel grants. AEG is a smaller conference focused in engineering and environmental geoscience, which allows for more intimate networking events and for students to have their voices heard. Members in attendance at the conference are enthusiastic and excited to hear about research that is being done by students and they give great feedback on poster presentations. The members of AEG are so supportive of students and young professionals, and I look forward to attending more conferences in the future. I would love to see the number of student attendees grow, because I feel that this conference was crucial to my development as a professional and as a geoscientist!"
